BRONCHIOLITIS IN CHILDREN

Introduction

Bronchiolitis is a common lung infection which affects the small airways called bronchioles in young children and infant, caused by viruses, commonly seen in very young children less than 1 year of age. It causes swelling and irritation and a buildup of mucus in the airways of the lung.

Symptoms of bronchiolitis can last for 1 to 2 weeks but occasionally can last for few days.

The symptoms of bronchiolitis are much like a cold:

  • Runny nose.
  • Stuffy nose.
  • Cough a high-pitched sound called wheezing can be present in many children.
  • slight fever.
  • Some kids may experience difficulty in breathing as well.

Treatment

Is symptomatic, good hydration and sometimes nebulisation may be required if severe distress. Oxygen is required only if saturation less than 92 %. Most kids get better within few days and there is no role of antibiotics
